Zygoma implants – what is it?
CLINIC | DPC specialists were the pioneers of Zygoma implants in Lithuania. Zygoma implants are quite different from conventional dental implants in that they anchor into the cheekbones, instead of your upper jaw. They may be used when maxillary bone quality or quantity is inadequate for the placement of regular dental implants. Zygoma implants are very durable and reliable.
Benefits of Zygoma implants
Traditionally, the restoration of the atrophied upper jaw requires the augmentation of the upper jaw bone. This is a more complex procedure that requires special care. To avoid such complicated procedures and possible complications, special cheekbone implants have been developed, which heal up quickly and easily withstand the chewing load.
When you should not use Zygoma implants?
Zygoma implantation procedures are only performed when the maxillary bone is severely atrophied and implantation would be impossible. The method is not used when there is enough bone in the jaw area for regular dental implants.
The course of Zygoma implantation
After it is determined that the patient is sufficiently healthy for this procedure, preparation for surgery begins. When the surgical site is anesthetized, a screw is inserted into the cheekbone, which will be used to attach a new tooth. After the surgery, the patient has to take very good care of his dental health and oral hygiene and listen to the instructions and recommendations of a doctor.
Downsides of Zygoma implantation
Zygoma implantation is a very safe procedure, but in some rare cases, mostly when a patient poorly follows the dentist’s recommendations, bad recovery can lead to the following complications:
- • Postoperative bleeding.
- • Damage to adjacent tissues.
- • Infection in the area around the implant.
- • Inflammation of the tissues around the implant.
